BEA for Faculty

BEA faculty members belong to an international community that pairs traditional research and creative scholarship, linking you to dynamic conventions, peer-reviewed journals, research and creative grants and awards, interest divisions and committee service opportunities, and year-round teaching resources that target classroom practice and career advancement.

 

Award and Grant Opportunities

BEA annually provides faculty over $40,000 in direct funding to help launch research studies, complete creative projects, and showcase traditional scholarship.

Whether you are early career or emeritus, BEA’s recognition pipeline is extensive. Signature honors include the Distinguished Education Service Award for transformative service, the Lifetime Achievement in Scholarship award for a 20-year record of research excellence and the Festival of Media Arts, a juried creative competition across audio, video, interactive and scriptwriting categories.

BEA funds a mix of competitive research and creative awards and grants that give educators some financial assistance and visibility for their work:

  • BEA Research Grants award $1,000 – $4,000 to support original studies in broadcasting, electronic media or mass-communication theory and practice; winners present at #BEAvegas convention.
  • New Faculty Research Grant (NFRG) annually awards $1,000 for untenured faculty, designed to jump-start an early research agenda.
  • Leibner Cooper Grant for Creative Productions on the History of Media awards $2,500 for faculty developing documentaries, audio series or multimedia projects focused on historical issues.
  • Library of American Broadcasting Foundation (LABF) Broadcast Historian Awards offers two $2,500 prizes each year recognizing outstanding historical scholarship and creative work.
  • BEA annually recognizes superior innovation, scholarship and creativity through the Diversity & Inclusion Awards, BEA Book Awards and the Innovation in Teaching Award.

Explore Our Publications

BEA provides members with online access to three leading peer-reviewed journals that span the breadth of media research, pedagogy, and practice.

Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media (JoBEM) – A quarterly journal publishing cutting-edge research on electronic media and broadcasting. JoBEM explores topics across industry trends, policy, content analysis, and audience studies.

Journal of Radio & Audio Media (JRAM) – Published semiannually, JRAM focuses on scholarship in audio-based media — including radio, podcasting, sound studies, and audio storytelling.

Journal of Media Education (JoME) – A quarterly multimedia journal dedicated to pedagogy and practice. JoME highlights classroom innovation, curriculum design, media production education, and critical reflections on teaching media.

Discover our Conferences & Events

  • BEA Annual Convention: Las Vegas, April – Over 250 pedagogy, research and production sessions are co-located with the NAB Show, giving faculty front-row access to scholarship and cutting-edge technology.
  • On-Location Conference: Denver, CO, October 2025 – Provides hands-on training and opportunities to promote academic scholarship. BEA is partnering with the CBI National Student Electronic Media Convention for immersive workshops, creative competitions and a media-career fair in 2025.
  • Research Symposium: Las Vegas, April – A scholarly symposium taking place at BEA’s annual convention that generates a peer-reviewed volume in the Electronic Media Research Book Series.  The 2026 topic is: Communicating in an AI Driven World: The Impact of AI on Creators and Consumers of News and Entertainment.

Board of Directors: Help lead the organization and shape our strategic direction.
Interest Divisions: Serve in leadership roles, organize conference sessions and paper competitions, and support scholarly communities’ partnerships.
Reviewers & Judges – Evaluate research and creative submissions for faculty and students.
