2011 BEA Distinguished Scholar Award Presented to Professor Thomas R. Lindlof
Washington, D.C. – Thomas R. Lindlof Ph.D., Professor at the University of Kentucky, 1984-Present, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Distinguished Scholar Award.
Dr. Lindlof has a distinguished record of publication within the discipline as well as service to BEA. He has been a prolific scholar with six (6) books and forty (40) journal articles and book chapters. He has delivered thirty-five (35) papers within the primary research associations of our discipline — BEA, AEJMC, NCA, and ICA. His work focuses on the cultural analysis of mass media with major contributions in introducing the ideas and methods of interpretative social science to media studies. He edited Natural Audiences: Qualitative Research of Media Uses and Effects, the first volume of ethnographic media research in the United States. His work follows that focus and ranges from the family’s use of media technology to reception of media in the religious community.
Dr. Lindlof has published in many of today’s major peer reviewed research journals: Communication Research; Journalism Quarterly; Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media; Journalism Studies; and the Journal of Communication. In addition, his work appears in the Journal of Media and Religion; Social Science Computer Review; Popular Music and Society, along with multiple chapters being contributed to edited texts. He is most often cited in Google Scholar for his work in the development of the theory of interpretive communities. His widely used qualitative research methods book Qualitative Communication Research Methods is now it is third edition. His book, Hollywood Under Siege, received critical acclaim from reviewers, including The Los Angeles Times, The Times of London, and Cineaste.
The BEA’s Distinguished Scholar Award (DSA) recognizes significant contributions to research and scholarship involving broadcast and electronic media. Recipients are evidenced by related extensive publication in books and leading journals, for at least twenty years. The DSA will be awarded to Professor Thomas R. Lindlof at BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas during a ceremony and reception on the evening of Sunday, April 10th at the Las Vegas Hilton. He will be giving a formal presentation to convention attendees on Monday, April 11th.
